At OCFC, attending our complimentary in-person ground school is encouraged for all students. We maintain a high standard that exceeds the FAA requirement by requiring a minimum of 85% on all FAA knowledge exams.
Complimentary OCFC-Sponsored Ground School Attendance is required. A minimum score of 85% is required to pass, in accordance with FAA standards. Terms & conditions apply (see application).

Orange Coast College Partnership
Orange Coast College and Orange County Flight Center work together to create a streamlined path into aviation. As the official “Flight Lab” for OCC’s aviation program, OCFC provides hands-on flight training integrated with structured classroom ground instruction.
Students enrolled at OCC can pursue an Associate degree in Aviation Science while gaining valuable, real-world flight experience. Ground training incorporates the proven, student-focused methods of Rod Machado, helping simplify complex aviation concepts and enhance learning outcomes.
OCFC’s ground school is delivered through our FAA-approved program by certified instructors (CFIs/CRIs) and is offered as a complimentary part of your training experience.
Structured, Efficient Curriculum
A great training program provides a clear, organized path from zero experience to FAA exam readiness.
At OCFC, students follow a structured curriculum designed to eliminate confusion and keep progress consistent.

Schedule
The Private Pilot Ground School is a structured 9-week program designed to build knowledge step by step for FAA exam success. Classes meet twice per week for two hours each session, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with short breaks provided as needed.
The course is divided into three progressive stages:
- Stage 1: Lessons 1–6
- Stage 2: Lessons 7–11
- Stage 3: Lessons 12–18
At the end of Stage 1 and Stage 2, students complete an exam covering the material from that section. Stage 3 concludes with a comprehensive final exam administered on the last day of class.
In total, the program includes 36 hours of instruction, along with three stage exams, all designed to prepare students for the FAA Knowledge Test.
To support success in the classroom, students are assigned required readings and homework before each session. This ensures consistent preparation and follows a building-block learning approach that reinforces each concept as the course progresses.

Because many students balance school, work, and other responsibilities, OCFC also offers a flexible, computer-based training approach that allows you to learn in a way that fits your schedule.
